How can I get a laptop computer running Windows XP to realize that it does have a CD drive installed? - laptop computers with windows xp

Someone "fixed" a laptop at work. Now you do not have a CD drive installed. I've tried the boot disk and restart the computer, an intuitive but not reading the disk. After looking into the control panel and tried to find a way to reinstall the hard drive, but saw nothing. Suggestions?
